We all know the damage that Termites can do to buildings, but do we understand what Termites are and how to control them.
Worldwide there are around 2,000 known species of Termites that have 3 categories, subterranean Termites, damp wood Termites and drywood Termites, in Europe only 2 species are found, and both are found in Gibraltar, they are Reticulitermes lucifugus and Kalotermes flavicollis these are both drywood Termites.
The latter has colonies of a few hundred insects including the King and Queen, the former has very large colonies that can be up to hundreds of thousands of insects including the King's and Queens.
Both species swarm to mate in spring but only Reticulitermes lucifugus transfer from wood by making tunnels using saliva and feaces.
Indication of Termites in buildings are painted or varnished wood surfaces blistering, when tapped will dissolve, wooden floorboards that feel spongy and springy when walked on and brown grainy looking tunnels emerging from skirting, floorboards, electric sockets, ceilings and window frames.
The detection of Termites can be by exposure of all wooden structures and or the use of thermal imaging cameras.
